GRANVILLE – It took years to get from Lima, Peru to Granville, Ohio. Along the way she became a media veteran who does “almost anything related to communication and marketing.” She’s Wendy Hollinger, owner and creative director of Phoenix Graphix Publishing Services.
“I was born in Lima, Peru,” she explained, “because my father was a teacher in the Pan Am exchange program there. My family returned from Peru and lived in Groveport, OH when I was little, but I did most of my growing up years in Huntington, WV.”
She graduated from high school in Huntington in 1981.
“Back then,” she recalled, “it was possible to be involved in everything you wanted, from All-State Chorus to marching band to basketball, and I was. I dreamed of being a teacher, and I dreamed of being a pilot, but was becoming interested in design. I credit my parents with seeing a spark in me and helping me fan that flame.”
Hollinger followed her family legacy to the University of Cincinnati for a degree in graphic design (Class of 86).
“My parents and brother attended UC,” she said, “and they also had a renowned design school, so I was drawn there. While there, I had the chance to produce the UC newspaper and magazine, and that’s when my love of publications was realized.”
“I was creative and loved design,” she noted, “but my fellow students at UC were extremely talented. I knew to be competitive in this field, a business foundation would set me apart.”
